17 November 2005

The Quarry House on Lees Moor, Crossroads, changed hands in November. Chris & Marion Smith had been in charge for over 20 years and will be sadly missed by many. The pub is being run on a short-term lease by Chameleon Pub Company, who also run the Old Hall, Haworth.

The Old Hall, Haworth, has replaced Tetley Bitter by Banks’s Bitter.

In Skipton, Canalside (which was Lock, Stock & Barrel) opened on 28th October. It was then selling Tetley Bitter, John Smith’s Cask, Black Sheep Bitter and a house beer from Tom Woods.

Herriot’s in Skipton has been selling Copper Dragon Beers alongside Theakston’s Bitter.

The Queens Arms, Litton, will be closed from December 28th to February 1st next.

The Grouse, Silsden, added Taylor’s Havercake Ale to the Golden Best in November.

The Crown, Addingham, added a guest beer to the Tetley Bitter in late October.

The Swan, also in Addingham, had Weston’s Old Rosie cider on handpump in late October.

Guest beers that have been tried during the Autumn at the Maypole, Long Preston, have included Copper Dragon Golden Pippin and Wharfedale Wharfemeister.

The Brown Cow, Keighley, started selling draught cider/perry during the Autumn.

The Cock & Bottle, Skipton, has gone onto a new beer ordering scheme, via Enterprise Inns. This means they can get beers from SIBA’s ‘Local Heroes’ guest list so extending the range of beers available, including Copper Dragon.

The Elm Tree, Embsay, has also joined the aforementioned ‘Local Heroes’ scheme.

The Tennant Arms, Kilnsey, added a guest beer (which was Harviestoun Gold Rush when visited) to its existing range of Tetley’s Bitter, Black Sheep Bitter and Taylor’s Landlord early in the Autumn.

From 24th November, when the new licensing regime starts, the Livery Rooms in Keighley has extended opening hours. These are 9 A.M. to midnight Sunday to Thursday and 9 A.M. to 1 A.M. Friday and Saturday.

Copper Dragon

The brewery’s first pub, which opened in mid 2005, is the Masons in Todmorden.  This was followed shortly after by their second, the Sun in Trawden.  More recently they have bought the Hare & Hounds, Black Lane Ends (near Colne) and the Shears in Halifax.

Naylor's

Several beers have been brewed since 1st July, named after local characters.  Mother’s Best (3.9%) is normally available at the Old White Bear, Cross Hills.  Other beers that have been seen in the free trade include Sparky’s Monday Night Mild (3.4%), Stoney’s Trippel ‘S’ (4.5%) and Roger Who Sang Challenger (4.8%).

A new beer, called Bruin, is now available.  Also available from the brewery are Original, Goldilocks and Hibernator.  Honeypot is available to order.

The Anchor, Gargrave no longer sells any real ale.

Marston’s Pedigree has appeared on the bar at the Devonshire, Cracoe, and at the Old Hall, Haworth.

The New Inn, Bocking has been bought by a private investor from Leeds.

A changing guest beer, from the Enterprise Inns Cask Club, is on offer at the Royal Oak, Skipton.  This has replaced the Marston’s Pedigree.

Lock, Stock & Barrel in Skipton is being rebuilt and should reopen in the Autumn as ‘Canalside’, a restaurant/café/bar.

The Old White Bear, Cross Hills is selling Mother’s Best (A.B.V. 3.9%), brewed next door at Naylor’s Brewery.  Several other Naylor’s beers have been brewed and have been seen in the free trade.

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway added another travelling buffet bar, selling real ales, in June.


1 July 2005

The Royal Oak, Haworth, reopened on May 27th following last August’s flooding.  It was selling Tetley Bitter, John Smith’s Cask and Taylor’s Landlord.  Managers are Tim and Claire Wild (Tim used to run the Crossroads Inn).

The Victoria, Kirkby Malham, had 5 beers on in early June.  These were Granny Mouse Bitter (Moorhouses’), Tetley Bitter, Black Sheep Bitter, Taylor’s Golden Best & Landlord.

The Boltmakers Arms, Keighley, now has 7 handpumps.  Five are for the Taylor’s regular beers, viz. Golden Best, Best Bitter, Landlord, Dark Mild & Ram Tam.  One is for a guest beer and the other for a changing cider/perry.

Weston’s cider has appeared for the Summer at the Lister Arms, Malham.

Greene King Abbot has reappeared for the Summer at the Mason’s Arms, Gargrave.

The Grouse at Oldfield reopened on May 11th with a lounge bar twice the size as previously.  The small public bar remains as was. 

The Narrow Boat in Skipton and the Bar T’at in Ilkley (both owned by Market Town Taverns) are now completely non-smoking pubs.

There are new licensees at Skipton’s Albion.  They are Phil & Kay Hargreaves.

The handpumps at the Friendly, Keighley, have been replaced by electric pumps.

The Craven Arms, Appletreewick, is now owned by a consortium headed by David Aynesworth, M.D. of Wharfedale Brewery.  Shortly after the takeover the beers found were Wharfedale Silk, Executioner & Folly Ale, Old Bear Hibernator, Tetley Bitter plus a guest.

Copper Dragon Brewery bought their first pub in June.  This is the Mason’s Arms, 1 Bacup Road, Todmorden.  Their second intended purchase is the Sun Inn at Trawden, due to go through in early July.

Just into Bradford’s branch area, the Guide (which is situated at a junction of 4 roads from Keighley, Crossroads, Harden and Cullingworth) is selling Wharfedale Folly Ale.  Manager Gill Penny hopes to add a Black Sheep beer soon.  The pub normally opens at 4 P.M. on weekdays, 12 noon at weekends.

The Boltmakers Arms, Keighley, now has 5 handpumps (for 4 Taylor’s beers including Dark Mild plus a guest beer) and a separate handpump for cider or perry. (19.4.05)

There is no longer cask Tetley’s Bitter at the Brontë Hotel, Lees, near Haworth.  There were 2 guest beers, Frolic and Bateman’s XB, in mid April. (19.4.05) .

The Old White Bear, Cross Hills, sells Naylor’s Best Bitter, Wells Bombardier and a guest beer (usually an IPA).  Also a cider or perry - Weston’s Herefordshire Country Perry in mid April.

The Black Horse, Hellifield, has added Black Sheep Special to the John Smith’s Cask.

The Bay Horse, Sutton, had increased its range of beers to Tetley Bitter & Dark Mild, Taylor’s Golden Best & Ram Tam and Greene King Old Speckled Hen.  There are plans to increase the range further.

Only cask beer at the Black Bull, Sutton, was Tetley Bitter in mid-March.

The White Lion, Kildwick, sells Tetley Bitter & Mild, Taylor’s Landlord and a rotating guest beer (Caledonian Deuchars IPA in mid-March).

The Royal Oak, Skipton, reopened on Good Friday selling Black Sheep Bitter and Theakston’s BB.  A guest beer may be added in the future. 

‘Nosh’ in Skipton has Wharfedale Folly as its regular cask beer on the sole handpump.

There are new licensees at the Blue Bell, Kettlewell.  They are Helena and John Williams and they have nine years’ experience between them.  They plan to offer home-made food and locally brewed beer.

The Narrow Boat, Skipton, is to go completely non-smoking from May 9th, following extensive customer research.

Phil & Val Booth took over at the Boltmakers Arms, Keighley, on 17.1.05.

The Addingham Social Club sells handpulled Tetley Bitter.

Weston’s Old Rosie cider still on sale at The Swan, Addingham.

The Old White Bear, Cross Hills, reserves one handpump for the sale of alternating cider and perry.

Both the Albion and Castle in Skipton are up for let.

Taylor's Dark Mild is back on sale at the Brown Cow, Keighley.

The Grouse, Oldfield, is closed from early/mid January to early May for extension/refurbishment.

What was the Grapes, in High Street in Keighley, is renamed the Gatehouse. Tetley Bitter is on handpump.

The Royal Oak, Skipton, is closed for about 6 weeks for refurbishment.

Thwaites’ Dark Mild has reappeared at the Craven Hotel, Skipton.

The Buck Inn, Buckden has a new owner as of last November. Beer range in December was Black Sheep Bitter, Copper Dragon Best Bitter, Taylor’s Landlord and Theakston’s Old Peculier.

The Royal Oak, Settle, had Archers Robin Redbreast and Jennings Redbreast as guests in early January.

The George, Hubberholme, is currently closed Sunday evenings and all day Monday.
