Latest News (13.12.04)

The Maypole, Long Preston, has replaced Tetley Bitter with Jennings’ Cumberland Ale.

The Black Bull, Cowling, has been bought by the owner of Ingham’s Pine and is no longer a pub.

The Black Bull in Sutton reopened on Tuesday 7th December.

The Black Horse, Hellifield, has reopened after being shut for about 3 years. It is being run by Russell and Angie Brook from Hull. The pub’s main bar area and sports bar have been revamped and decorated. The kitchen and restaurant areas will be opened in the New Year. In mid-December John Smith’s Cask was available but Russell hopes to add further beers in due course.

New licensees at the Albion, Skipton, are Kirsty Stead and Bruce Bridges.

Robin and Sue Buttery left the Red Lion, Skipton, after 16½ years. Taking over are Neil Mayers and Rachel Fletcher.

Granville Boocock has moved from the Buck, Malham, to take over at the nearby Victoria in Kirkby Malham. The previous licensees, George and Margaret, have moved to the Punchbowl in Silsden.

Daleside Morocco Ale will be available over the Xmas period at the New Inn, Appletreewick.

Ray and Eileen Green are leaving the Boltmakers Arms, Keighley, to take over at the Cross, Heptonstall, in the middle of January.

Goose Eye Brontë Bitter was on sale at the Fleece, Haworth, in mid-December.

Taylor's Dark Mild is back on sale at the Brown Cow, Keighley, due to selling too slowly.

Latest News (24.11.04)

There are new licensees at the Railway, Skipton. They are Ian and Elivia from the Catterick area.

The ‘Escape Bar’ in Skipton replaced Copper Dragon Golden Pippin with Scott’s 1816 in late October.

Gordon and Christine Peacock are soon to retire as managers at the Burlington Arms, Keighley. They have been there for 25 years. Their daughter Tina is to take over.

The White Bear, Eastburn, has reopened after a short period of closure.

New licensees at the Bay Horse, Oxenhope, are Chris and Jackie. The beer range in early November was Tetley Bitter, Black Sheep Bitter, Taylor’s Landlord and one guest beer.

The Waggon & Horses, Hebden Bridge Road, Oxenhope, has been selling a variety of changing guest beers through the Autumn. Copper Dragon Golden Pippin is a permanent fixture.

In late October the Crossroads Inn at Crossroads was selling John Smith’s Cask, Jennings Cumberland and Charles Wells Bombardier.

New licensee at the Bay Horse, Sutton-in-Craven, is Roger Ellison (who was president of Cross Hills Working Mens’ Club for 5 years). Ex licensee Chris Suri has departed for Sri Lanka with his wife Rachael and family.

The Plough, Wigglesworth, now also sells mead.

Work has been seen to be in progress at the Black Horse, Hellifield, previously shut for some time.

The Swan, Carleton, now sells Wells’ Bombardier as well as Webster’s Green Label.

The Black Bull, Cowling, has Tetley Bitter and a rotating Eastwood & Sanders guest beer.

The White Bear, Eastburn, is currently closed.

‘Chrome’, at the junction of Low Mill Lane and Bradford Road, Keighley, has now reopened.

The Brown Cow, Keighley, was presented with an award for ‘Customer Choice For Best Pint Of Mild On 2004 Mild Trail’ on 12.10.04 on the basis of the votes received from those that took part in the May 2004 Mild Trail competition.

The Craven Heifer, Stainforth, had 3 different Thwaites beers in August 2004, viz. Bitter, Thoroughbred and Lancaster Bomber.

Taylor’s Landlord reappeared at the Royal Oak, Settle, also in August 2004.

Long Ashes Inn, Threshfield, has been selling Black Sheep Bitter & Special, Tetley Dark Mild & Bitter, and Daleside Bitter in Summer 2004.

The Craven Heifer Inn, Grassington Road, Skipton (about a mile north of Skipton) has 3 regular cask beers: Moorhouses Premier & Pride of Pendle and Theakston’s Best Bitter.

The Old Station, Giggleswick, reopened in the Summer of 2004. New licensee is Maria Wild.

Following a closure of several weeks the Black Bull, Sutton-in-Craven, has reopened. Tetley Bitter was on sale in mid-September.

The Fleece, Haworth, has new licensees in John and Sharon Bladen. The Dark Mild appears to be no longer on sale.

Andy & Mandy Gascoigne left the Waggon & Horses, Oxenhope, towards the end of July. Although the adjoining Oxenhope Moorland Brewery is now shut the pub has been sold as a going concern.

The Golden Fleece, Oakworth, has added Black Sheep Bitter to the Tetley and Boddington’s bitters.

Following the damaging floods in Haworth in early August, the Royal Oak, near the station, is closed until after Christmas we believe.

BROWN COW, “AN IMPROVED PUB O.K.”

Some years ago our branch awarded a ‘Most Improved Pub’ at the end of each year. We haven’t awarded any such award since 2001 but we are to present an interim award to the Brown Cow, Keighley, “In recognition of quality and increased choice of real ales”. The pub has considerably increased the number of handpumps and variety since Barry and Carol Taylor took over this Timothy Taylor pub, introducing a guest beer, normally from a local independent brewer. Taylor’s Dark Mild is also available, unusual in Keighley, alongside Golden Best, Best Bitter and Landlord. The award takes place on 13th July at about 8.30 P.M.

Latest News June 2004

J. D. Wetherspoon opened their Skipton outlet, the Duke of Devonshire (the old Devonshire Hotel) on May 16th. Plenty of room available with the area next to the bar being non-smoking. The bar area is to the rear of the pub. Guest beers were £1.65/pint on the opening day. The manager is Matthew Gillett.

The Cavendish Arms, Embsay, changed hands on May 10th. Previously run by Brenda Naylor and son Stephen, the two have now returned to join Brenda’s other son Robert at the Old White Bear, Cross Hills. The new licensees are Mr. Owen and Mrs. Leigh Pugh.

The Old Station, Giggleswick, shut suddenly in the middle of March when the licensee disappeared. It is owned by Punch Taverns.

A permanent outlet for cask-conditioned cider is the Helwith Bridge in the village of the same name in Ribblesdale. The cider is served from a 5 gallon polycask on the bar. Which cider is on may vary.

Cider should now have reappeared, for the Summer only, at the Lister Arms, Malham.

26 year old licensee of the Black Bull in Sutton, Jamie Stubbs, was found hanging at the pub on June 9th. An inquest has been opened and adjourned.

Chris Suri and wife Rachael continue to run the Bay Horse in Sutton following the sale of the Black Bull.

There is a new bar in Skipton, known as ‘Escape’. It is alongside the Town Hall. We have not been told what the single handpump which has been observed will sell.

There is no longer a guest beer at the Railway, Skipton, just Tetley Mild & Bitter.

Contrary to rumours, the New Inn, Appletreewick, is NOT for sale and never has been. Licensee John Pitchers fully intends to remain at the pub.

In mid-May no less than three Copper Dragon beers were found at the Hart’s Head, Giggleswick, hese being Dark Ale, Scotts 1816 and Golden Pippin.

Selling well at Broughton Road Bowling Club, Skipton, is Copper Dragon Dark Ale.Tetley’s Dark Mild was spotted on sale at the Elm Tree, Embsay, in late May.

Herriot’s Hotel, Skipton, normally has a Copper Dragon beer on sale (Scott’s 1816 in late May).

The Queens Arms, Litton, now brews ‘Potts Beck’ (A.B.V. 4.2%) as well as the ‘Litton Ale’.

The Cross Keys, East Marton, was selling Copper Dragon Best Bitter & Golden Pippin as well asTetley Bitter and Theakston Cool Cask in late May.

At the Boar's Head, Long Preston, the beers on sale have been Tetley Bitter, Boddingtons Bitter and Charles Wells Bombardier. (26/06/04)

Up the road in Appletreewick at the Craven Arms is Wharfedale Executioner & Folly Gold, Moorhouses App'trick Ale, Old Bear Original, Black Sheep Bitter and Tetley Bitter. (27/06/04)

Keighley’s new Wetherspoon pub opened on June 27th. It is called ‘The Livery Rooms’ and was selling about 10 draught beers on the opening day. Manager is John Clayton. The pub is open from 10 A.M. every day. About half the customer area is designated as non-smoking and it is wheelchair-accessible with a specially adapted toilet for disabled.

The licensee at the Old Star in Steeton is Mel Feather, who is Keighley-born and had recently been a licensee in Surrey.

The licensee at the Friendly, Keighley, is Paul Smith. Handpumps have replaced the old electric pumps.

The Star on North Street, Keighley, has cask Tetley Bitter and hopes to add a guest beer soon to increase the range.

The Worth Valley Inn, Ingrow, is now selling real ale again after a time without any. The beer is Tetley Bitter.

Tetley Dark Mild has been on sale at the Lamb, Leeming (a rare find in the area)


The King’s Arms, Silsden, has been selling Wadworth’s 6X alongside the Tetley Bitter.

Latest guest beer at the Boltmakers Arms, Keighley, is Wharfedale Folly Gold (A.B.V. 5%).

The ‘Chrome’ bar, almost next to Keighley railway station, has been shut for at least two months on orders of police and magistrates following a brawl which spilled into Low Mill Lane in the early hours of Sunday 20th June.

Latest News 18/03/04

The Star, Steeton, reopened earlier this year following a short closure. Unfortunately, this was followed almost immediately by a fire from which the licensee and family thankfully escaped. We wish them better luck in the future! (18.3.04)

Craven District Council has turned down plans to convert the Flying Horseshoe, next to Clapham station, into apartments. Clapham-cum-Newby residents were bitterly opposed to the plans following the closure of both Goat Gap and Cross Streets in recent times. The pub remains shut, since last Autumn. (18.3.04)

The Golden Lion, Horton, sells Taylor’s Golden Best & Landlord at present. A Copper Dragon beer should be added in the Summer. (4.3.04)

The George Inn, Hubberholme, was selling Copper Dragon Scott's 1816, Black Sheep Best Bitter & Special at the end of February. The licensee says that a Copper Dragon beer has now replaced Tetley Bitter. New Winter opening hours are as follows. Mon closed all day; Tue-Thu 12-3, 6.30-10.30; Fri 12-3, 6.30-11; Sat 12-4, 6.30-11; Sun 12-4, 6.30-10. Food 12-2, 6-8.30 daily. (4.3.04)

The Friendly in Keighley has replaced its electric pumps with handpumps, for both the Taylor’s Golden Best and Best Bitter. (4.3.04)

Actor Robin Dearden is the new licensee at Stanbury’s Wuthering Heights. The games room has been converted into a restaurant. What was the restaurant now has a pool table and T.V. (4.3.04)

The Grouse, Silsden, has reopened as a restaurant and pub. Taylor’s Golden Best & Landlord and bottled foreign beers were on sale in January (Jan. 2004).

The Star at Steeton closed early in 2004. There is a ‘To Let’ sign on the outside (Jan. 2004).

‘Chrome’ (top of Low Mill Lane, Keighley) has changed its opening hours to 4 P.M. to 11 P.M. every day. (Jan. 2004).

In charge at Skipton’s Royal Oak are Rebecca and Darren Maltby. A guest beer is available and both Caledonian 80/- and Marstons Pedigree have been on sale (Feb. 2004).

At the Black Horse, Grassington, new licensee is Mr. Moamy Hubert. He tells us that the pub is owned by New Century Inns. The present range of beers is Black Sheep Best Bitter, John Smith’s Cask, Tetley Bitter and a rotating guest beer (Feb. 2004).

At the Old Hall, Threshfield, Taylor’s Best Bitter & Landlord have both reappeared (Feb. 2004).

The Keighley & Worth Valley Railway has draught beer available throughout January and February, to be found in the guard’s van.

The Bronte Hotel, Lees, has a changing guest beer on.

The Bracken Arms (ex Knowle Arms), Keighley, no longer has any real ale.

The Bay Horse, Oxenhope, now has three beers on the bar (and sometimes four).

The Kings Arms, Silsden, is being run by Francis Huggins, a CAMRA member. Tetley Bitter at present with plans for regularly changing guest beers.

The strong Thwaites ‘Good Elf’ (A.B.V. 4.9%) was found in the Golden Lion, Settle, on 30.12.03. Other beers on were Dark Mild, Bitter and Thoroughbred.

Also in Settle the Royal Oak only has Black Sheep Bitter as its sole real ale during the Winter months.

In early January the Tempest Arms, Elslack, had Black Sheep Best Bitter, Taylors Landlord and Best Bitter, Copper Dragon 1816, Wharfedale Executioner and Theakston Best Bitter (N.B. no Jennings).
